What to Know About Sedation Dentists

November 20, 2023

Cavities aren't just an issue for children. According to the CDC, 25% of adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have at least one. Part of this may be due to a fear of going to the dentist. This can be due to several reasons, and it can be quite detrimental. This is because oral health can affect physical health. Fortunately, there are sedation dentists out there that can make the experience much more pleasant. If you're curious about sedation dentistry or think you may need it, here is a bit more information.

They Can Make Dental Sessions Stress Free

Sedation dentists have one goal for their patients -- to ensure things go smoothly. If you're unable to go to the dentist without getting extreme anxiety, you may be given an oral sedative. This will make you feel mellow and maybe even groggy. Nitrous oxide is another popular option as well. Also known as "laughing gas," nitrous oxide is a good option if you have plans afterward since it wears off quickly. Both options are simply meant to keep you calm and relaxed during the appointment.

Not Everyone Is a Candidate for All Options

There are several reasons someone may not be well suited to receive dental sedation or a certain type of sedation. Children, for example, usually cannot take oral sedation, so laughing gas is preferred. Pregnant women typically cannot receive sedation, especially during the first trimester. Talk to your dentist about which method is best for you.

You May Need a Ride Home

While sedation dentistry is safe, patients should have someone drive them to and from the appointment. This is because their reflexes may be compromised for a period, and the length of time will depend on the type of sedation you receive. You may be okay to drive after laughing gas, but this will depend on what your dentist suggests. Either way, sedation dentistry is still a fantastic way to help people get through their anxiety and get back on track with their oral health.
